Hi! I'm Anaya, an incoming third year at the University of Wisconsin–Madison studying Computer Science and Data Science, with a minor in Education Policy. I'm fascinated by how technology shapes institutions, and how institutions shape who gets access to technology.
I'm the current deputy director at UW's AI Safety organization (the Wisconsin AI Safety Initiative aka WAISI), where I spend a lot of time thinking about various risk areas in AI Safety, and how I as a generalist can help. I believe AI safety is one of the most important problems of our generation — and I think people with policy and social science backgrounds need to be in that conversation.
Computer science taught me how to critically think. Data science taught me how to evaluate data, and come to conclusions from it. In education policy I learned the part evidence plays into legal decision making. I think I have a unique perspective of both sciences and humanities, which is extremely important in AI safety. In fact, I think more AI safety folks would benefit from more well rounded knowledge
When I'm not studying or at an AI safety reading group, I'm usually either cooking up some new recipe, hanging out with friends, or listening to music. I also like singing, making papercrafts, and talking to strangers. I'm also a big fan of long conversations about absolutely anything
